The books I read in the first month of 2016 were a product of my unofficial goal to read my own damn books (
it's a thing). It's been a complete success! If you consider total success to be reading zero books that I already own and buying or borrowing all the books I read. Whoops. Admittedly, I could have done better. But I read so many great books this month that I didn't even care!
Each of these books (with the exception of the
Hamilton biography) were borrowed from my local library, so that totally counts toward #ReadYourOwnDamnBooks, right?!
Read
Prudence by Gail Carriger. I
love her silly and fabulous Victorian-supernatural-steampunk novels, but I had some other thoughts about this one, you guys. I'm definitely going to get into them in another post. I will say that in spite of my reservations, I very much enjoyed getting back into the world built by Carriger in the
Soulless series. It was like running into a beloved friend you haven't seen in a while.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I picked up this book for a couple of reasons: first, the cover was beautiful and the title mysterious. Second, I kept seeing it everywhere I went - in stores, online, and then, in my library. It was like fate. And it's quickly become one of my favorite novels I've read in recent months. It's absolutely beautiful and enchanting.
Legend by Marie Lu. This is one of those dystopian YA novels that I knew I would enjoy, that countless people recommended, and that I wanted to get to...after I gave myself a bit of a dystopian YA book break. It's been a while since I started an audiobook that I felt compelled to continue listening to (even after I arrived at the place I was traveling to). This definitely had that appeal for me.
Prodigy by Marie Lu. Immediately after finishing
Legend, I checked out
Prodigy so I could continue the trilogy. I wolfed down the entire book in one day.
Currently Reading
Champion by Marie Lu. Are we sensing a theme? Shortly after finishing
Prodigy, I checked out the audiobook of
Champion, the only version immediately available at my library. I'm currently working on this one, although I've been warned that my life will no longer be the same once I finish it.
Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow: Yep, I was one of the poor saps who acquired this doorstop of a novel in the month of January, and decided the only way I would get through it would be to join the
#HamAlong. It was going pretty well for me until last week (when I read zero pages and didn't put together my blog post...the time just got away from me, and well, better luck next week??)
Checked Out
I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. Even though I'm a terrible Goodreads member, I was intrigued by this book, one that one of the reading groups I'm a part of decided to choose for book club. I've yet to crack the cover, but it is a book that's been on my radar for a while (and that dovetails nicely with my goal of reading more non-fiction this year). Hopefully I'll get to it before I have to return it!

Good thing we've got eleven more months to read our own damned books. ;) I did well on that front but got a HUGE library haul yesterday, so we'll see how February goes!
ReplyDeleteOoooh, library haul. I gotta check your blog! I usually read such a mix that it's difficult to have enough material to put one of these kinds of posts together, but not this month! Pre-college, I frequented the library ALL THE TIME. Post-college? Not so much. Tragic, but true. But you're right, there's still time for me to read my own damn books! :)
DeleteI read The Night Circus a few months ago and I absolutely loved it too! I think some people found the changing timelines to be confusing but for me it just added to the magical feeling. I still haven't read the Legend trilogy *hides before someone throws it at me and forces me to read it*. I love dystopian though so I don't see why I haven't. Maybe soon, eh? But I really should read my own damn books too though. I finally read The 5th Wave this month and loved it so I guess I kept my dystopian loving heart happy

The Night Circus really was magical. If you love dystopian, you'll love the Legend trilogy - I just finished Champion and fell into a black hole of feelings. I really liked the first two, but the last was something else entirely (in the best way). I really didn't expect to feel as strongly about it as I did! I have yet to read The 5th Wave, so maybe I'll add that to my ever-growing TBR :)
