Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver has been my most anticipated IRL book club pick of the year, and it didn’t disappoint! I listened to the audiobook — Charlie Thurston does a phenomenal job with the narration — and in spite of its length, I was so engaged in this story and didn’t want to put it down. Demon Copperhead is a counter narrative to the widely held stereotypes of rural Appalachia, and it is moving, beautifully written, relentlessly sad, and hopeful all at once. The vibes reminded me of Dopesick by Beth Macy crossed with Friday Night Lights and while fictional, it works to bring awareness to the systemic issues and opioid crisis that disproportionately impact a community largely ignored by the rest of the world — that is, when it’s not being made the butt of everyone’s jokes. If you can handle the content (please check CWs), I highly encourage you to pick this one up. 📸: A kindle displaying the ebook cover of Demon Copperhead sits on a white shelf. I’m reaching out to touch the kindle with one hand, and beige paperback books can be seen partially out of frame in the background. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/C5iqdLBLqxM/
