Alternately stream of consciousness and epistolary in its exploration of her life, Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot tells so much story in so few pages. This memoir traces Mailhot’s experiences as a writer, mother, and Indigenous woman with mental illness, primarily through unsent letters to her partner written while she was receiving inpatient psychiatric care. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mailhot’s writing reminded me, in the best way, of a Natalie Diaz interview with Jacqueline Woodson that I read a few years ago and that I still think about, on average, a few times a year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are a ton of content warnings for this book, so please be aware of those going in. That said, I couldn’t put this book down or stop thinking about it when I finished it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CW: alcoholism, violence, neglect, suicidal ideation, PTSD, bipolar II, pregnancy/postpartum depression, sexual abuse ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: My left hand is holding a paperback copy of Heart Berries and my journal. Everything is resting on my blanket covered lap. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/Cic0JyRrQ3i/
