Kate Clayborn books are a particular kind of magic for me — so much so that I’ve been carefully parceling them out, keeping them in my back pocket for when I might need to read one of them for the first time. Beginner’s Luck follows Kat, a materials research scientist, and Ben, a recruiter who hilariously botches his approach. Clayborn balances an unlikely premise (the series follows three lottery winning friends as they try to find what they’re looking for) by somehow not making the book about that at all. Instead, it is about Kat, who has only ever been searching for a place to build a home, in literal and figurative ways, and about Ben, whose return to his long abandoned hometown forces him to confront what home means. I love the very real ways in which this is a book about a woman in STEM, and not just because she wears a lab coat. I love the relationship between Ben and his father. I wanted to hold Ben’s hand, give Kat the biggest hug, and explore the salvage yard for hours. I know I’m going to enjoy reading the rest of the series (because I’ve already started book two!)
