@iansreads recently wrote a post that asked which authors are changing the game, and as I was reading The Deep by Rivers Solomon, I discovered that they are one of them! This novella has already been the recipient of a Hugo award nomination and much critical acclaim, so it's not like I hadn't heard of it, but I was still blown away. Based on a song by clipping. that was commissioned by This American Life (the full story is fascinating and can be found in the afterword of the book), this novella is about the power of community, identity, generational trauma, and collective memory. It is folk tale, myth, history, and fantasy. I love the audiobook, narrated by Daveed Diggs. I love nontraditional narratives (and this certainly qualifies). I love the way verb tense is used to reinforce the larger themes of the novel. I love the idea of something terrible being turned into something beautiful. I love that that Yetu thrashes against the constraints of what it means to be good and do your duty, and in so doing is able to find salvation. So tell me: what authors have you read lately that are changing the game? If you're looking for one, I've got a suggestion for ya! via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CD_oPEBgYy0/
