One of the genres I'm interested in but haven't read a lot of is graphic novels. I've read a few, usually adaptations of novels I love, but I rarely reach for them and I'm not sure why! Give me all your recs. Maus by Art Spiegelman is one I've been meaning to pick up for ages, so when I got a chance to go into my classroom earlier this summer, I grabbed it! Maus is a graphic memoir that tells the story of Art, a cartoonist, and his relationship with his father, Vladek, a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust. I've read a lot about that time period, but as someone whose family is Polish, I'm always drawn in by these stories. I don't know much about my family's experiences during that time - those who are still alive don't talk about it - but I could so clearly hear their voices in Vladek's mannerisms, his accent, and the way he sprinkles in Polish expressions that it sometimes stopped me in my tracks. I feel acutely how important it is for Art to have captured his father's story - to commit in writing the history that would otherwise die with him. I'm glad to have resources like this to share with students, and I'm looking forward to eventually picking up the second novel in the duology! via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CEoplD2AB_A/
