Omg guys, check out this great new book no one’s ever heard of! - said no one about Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi 🤣 My copy of the audiobook came courtesy of a @bostonbookfanatic giveaway, and it came right in time for the Stamped buddy read that took place on IG last year. I really enjoyed joining the chats and listening to everyone’s takeaways as we worked to process this text. While it ultimately took me a little while longer to work through it (I finished toward the end of last year), it was so worth it! After joining a teacher workshop with Jason Reynolds and Dr. Kendi last year about the YA edition of Stamped (also phenomenal), I’ve become such a fan of his scholarship and so continuing with the full text seemed like the next natural step. Approaching the book via audio made it less intimidating for sure, but if I had to do it again, I’d reach for a hard copy — better for annotating! I don’t have anything groundbreaking to add to the conversation surrounding this work — it was phenomenal, accessible to those who haven’t studied history in a hot minute, and truly one of the most important books I’ve read (it has shaped my approach to teaching literature!) I also recommend starting with the YA version, which is obviously a bit more accessible and gave me a stronger base of knowledge going into the full text. I want to add that I’m not “done.” Reading anti-bias/anti-racist texts is only one step in a series of actions I’m taking to try and become a better educator and human. Obvious TWs/CWs for racism, rape, violence, brutality. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CKjXHaBgKEn/
