After Clare @unsuccessfulbookclub raved about The Duke Who Didn’t by Courtney Milan and called it an A Week to Be Wicked readalike, I had to read it. And I did. Cover to cover. In one evening. It was lovely. Chloe and Jeremy’s story is heart squeezingly sweet and funny and sad and so beautifully done. Jeremy is gone for Chloe and just an absolute well meaning disaster of a person, while Chloe is a well ordered list maker with no time for nonsense. The way both of these characters see each other for who they are — not cold, not a clown — is so special. I loved the idea of Wedgeford as a haven for social outcasts and, if only for a few days a year, for anyone who wants to be a part of it! I loved the festival prep as the backdrop to the story, alongside one of my favorite tropes (when a character asks the person they love to help them pick a partner — is there a more concise way of wording that? Probably 🤣) I’ve been super into historical romance the last couple of years, but this is the first one I’ve picked up that has has Chinese characters and culture central to the plot, which I loved to see. Milan’s author’s note at the end is a must read! This was my first book of hers, but it definitely won’t be my last.
