The Duke Goes Down was my first Sophie Jordan, but it won’t be my last! This historical romance reminded me a little of Tessa Dare’s Spindle Cove series with its small town, slightly unconventional spinsters vibes which was fun. What I found unique about this story was the reversal of fortune: the story follows Imogen, a vicar’s daughter, and Peregrine (a Duke who’s as insufferable as his name would suggest) who loses his life of privilege after finding out he’s illegitimate. Imogen and Perry have a history, so when Imogen decides to protect the heiresses of the town from Perry’s schemes, it has unintended consequences. Imogen is such a fantastic FMC and I like how self assured and purposeful she is, and that she had had some romantic experience before the MMC (unusual for a historical). She isn’t afraid to set down Perry when it’s called for, but she’s also able admit when she’s made a mistake. I’m looking forward to picking up book two, which follows Imogen’s best friend Mercy, soon! 📸 1: A kindle displaying the ebook cover of The Duke Goes Down sits on a cushion.
