What book took you ages to finish? Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi was one of those books for me. Almost a year after starting it, I finally finished it. Its got a weird and wandering plot, a pinch of magical realism, and elements of familiar fairy tales - but don't let that fool you. This story is unsettling and vaguely sinister and unlike anything else.
