If you were obsessed with Into Thin Air by John Krakauer, then you NEED to pick up Endurance by Alfred Lansing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Endurance tracks the incredible journey of 28 men from 1914-1917 as they attempted to cross the Antarctic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I don’t want to say too much — I went in knowing almost nothing, which is my favorite way to read, and what I recommend in this case. RESIST THE URGE TO GOOGLE! Shoutout to whoever recommended this to me — I can’t remember who! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll say this: Lansing does an incredible job of synthesizing all the information about Shackleton’s expedition and balances it with humanizing moments and firsthand accounts. This is not your father’s nonfiction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was utterly captivated by the spirit of adventure, the absolute nuttiness of exploration (in a time before radio, radar, or modern navigation!!!!!!!!!), and the remarkable resilience that mankind possesses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This book reminded me of a scene from The West Wing: Mallory: Why? Sam: 'Cause it's next. 'Cause we came out of the cave, and we looked over the hill and we saw fire; and we crossed the ocean and we pioneered the west, and we took to the sky. The history of man is hung on a timeline of exploration and this is what's next. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The wreck of the Endurance was discovered, nearly perfectly preserved, in March of THIS YEAR, in part using Captain Worsley’s records! It was decided that it will not be recovered and has been declared a protected monument. History! Is! Cool! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: I’m holding up a kindle displaying the ebook cover of Endurance. The cover features a photo of the Endurance taken by the expedition photographer Frank Hurley. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CjS71S5rDgI/
