The Enemy was the last book on Sarah Adams’ backlist that I hadn’t read and it turned out to be my least favorite of her books (Which only means it’s time for a reread of some faves!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Enemy follows Ryan and June, who were bitter rivals in high school and are forced, years later, to spend time together at their best friends’ wedding. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This forced proximity, enemies to lovers, second chance romance should have been what dreams are made of, but instead felt like a let down. Let’s start with the things I liked: I liked the conversations about career success and sacrifice, about returning to your hometown, about friendships evolving as people’s lives evolve. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The things I didn’t vibe with: the portrayal of the heroine’s body image issues bothered me, and there were SO many immature antics (and not just on the part of the main characters). I just didn’t feel the emotional investment in the characters that I normally have with an Adams’ novel! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That said, if you’re looking for a closed door The Hating Game readalike, I think you may enjoy this one! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CW: off page infidelity and loss of a parent ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: A phone displaying the ebook cover of The Enemy is set against a photo of a half dozen donuts of various flavors. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CkTG21nrAzl/
