Generations and generations of people have listened to Dan Rather talk about what’s happening in the world - first on television, and now on Twitter. My mom was tickled when I told her that I was listening to this book - I found out that both my great grandmother and grandmother loved Dan Rather. What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner is a collection of essays written in the aftermath of the 2016 election, and it was fascinating to reflect on that as I read it shortly after the end of the 2020 election. In it, Rather and Kirschner reflect on the greatest challenges facing our country, and on the things that bring us together when the country is coming apart. And they do it all gracefully, without once mentioning Trump’s name. The essays are a mishmash of personal and professional anecdotes from Rather’s inimitable career as a journalist on topics ranging from education to military service to media to science. I greatly enjoyed the audiobook, narrated by Rather, as well as getting to watch the Indies First Q&A with Rather and Kirschner (link in my bio!) “By reading books, we can continually challenge our own biases and learn beyond our level of formal occasions. These are qualities that are needed more than ever.” via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CJGelvsg2im/
