As much as I’ve embraced contemporary romance this year, I really resisted picking up The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams because it centers on a trope I don’t gravitate to: marriage in crisis. But SO many of you rave about the series that when I saw a copy at my used bookstore, I had to snag it. Stay at home mom Thea and MLB player Gavin have drifted apart and find themselves facing a turning point in their marriage, when Gavin’s best friend intervenes and inducts him into the Bromance Book Club, a group of men who use romance novels to better understand their emotions and rescue their relationships. While this could easily have gone campy, I totally bought in to the club and was invested in each member: so much so that I immediately started the second book after finishing the first. I loved following a romantic hero with a stutter - more diverse heroes, please! Themes of self-reflection, healing past trauma, and acceptance brought genuine depth to this funny, frustrating story. Like many of the men in the club, I was guilty of judging this story prematurely, and I’m glad I ultimately picked it up! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: I’m sitting at a picnic table and my hand, in a brace, is resting on a paperback copy of The Bromance Book Club. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CU-EAhUrkmm/
