The Seduction of Elliot McBride by Jennifer Ashley has me feeling torn. I LOVED the beginning of this book - it felt so unlike any historical I’ve read: Julianna gets jilted moments before her wedding and marries her best friend Ainsley’s brother instead. This is the childhood friends to lovers premise I never knew I needed! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But it’s also the first book in this series I haven’t loved with my whole heart, because the pacing was SO SLOW. At one point toward the end they mention that two weeks have passed and I was like THAT’S IT?! A lot of the book felt repetitive, in part because the couple gets together so early and in part because Elliot experiences repeated PTSD episodes and he and Julianna have repeated conversations where she wants him to disclose what happened to him and he refuses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ultimately I did finish the book but I didn’t find myself gripped by it in the same way I was with the first four books in the series. I know the series started out with just the Mackenzie’s books and branched out from there, so I’m hoping I don’t feel the same way about the rest of the series as I do about this one! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CW: torture, imprisonment ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ID: A kindle displaying the ebook cover of The Seduction of Elliot McBride lays on a white shelf with a wood floor underneath. I’m reaching out to touch the kindle with one hand. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/Cn4Yy0eLsie/
