How to Keep House While Drowning by kc davis is a book that was recommended to me and that I feel like I’m starting to see more and more among my reader friends (like when you buy a car and see it everywhere!) Davis has endeavored to create a short, accessible, no bullshit approach improving executive functioning. Here are some of the things I jotted down as I listened: Your space is here to serve you! You are not lazy! 5 Things Tidying: 1. Trash 2. Dishes 3. Laundry 4. Things that have a place that are not in their place 5. Things that do not have a place Do 20 mins a day. Give yourself a window (like waiting for DoorDash to arrive) to complete a task. THROW IT AWAY. Care tasks are morally neutral! Reframe your language around cleaning: “Chores are obligations. Care tasks are kindness to self. Cleaning is endless. Resetting the space has a goal.” Be a compassionate observer of your life. We confuse an organized space with an aesthetically pleasing space. An ode to baskets 🤣 Anything worth doing is worth doing half assed. The chapter on division of rest and care tasks between partners brought up memories of my parents’ unhealthy relationship to these things and made me consider my own relationship to care tasks. Things Davis talks about that I am already doing to care for myself: -Paying for someone else to do a care task if you have the privilege to do so (Grocery delivery and DoorDash, baby!) -Taking care of end of day tasks (what Davis calls closing duties) before sitting down at the end of the day because I won’t get back up to do them later. -Ignoring laundry rules. I’ve been washing my clothes regardless of color or temp for years and frequently keep clothes in baskets instead of putting them away — literally it does not matter. Things Davis talks about that I am working toward: -Reframing my language around care tasks (I’m an English teacher — we know better than anyone that word choice matters!) -Releasing myself from guilt when I am unable to do ALL THE THINGS I don’t normally gravitate to this genre but found that as usual, my bestie was right, and this book was relatable and insightful! via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/Cpuqox2rmug/
