Finding Me by Viola Davis is the audiobook that got Davis the Grammy in her EGOT, and after reading it with my book club, I understood why. Davis is a gifted performer and storyteller and I highly recommend reading this one via audio. I was surprised that given her success, the majority of the book focused not on her career, but rather on her childhood and early adulthood. She doesn’t use her memoir to litigate conflicts, but has discussions about the role that racism and colorism had in her life, education, and career. Being a TV fan, I enjoyed the moments where she spoke about shaping iconic characters like Annalise Keating and would have loved to hear more about her process. However, I understood that her goal was to bring attention to the abuse, abject property, and struggles that disproportionately affect Black women. While this book was at times difficult to read (please check CWs before picking this one up) it led to a lot of powerful conversations in our book club, whether readers were fans of her before reading or not!
