I picked up Fragile Sanctuary by Catherine Cowles pretty much immediately after finishing Ashes of You (FS is a spin off with a character who cameos in AOY) and I was delighted to dig into the backstory of FBI profiler Anson, who Doesn’t Do That Anymore on account of his Tragic Past which we Do Not Speak Of. He communicates in grunts and monosyllables, wears only black, and keeps everyone at arms length (think Roy Kent but sadder, or Rip Wheeler, but without the crimes) so naturally Rhodes, who is a walking bouquet of rainbows and puppy dogs, crashes into his life and starts making him feel things. He is not pleased. But in spite of her sunshine-y appearance, Rhodes is grappling with a past of her own. She also might be the only one who understands what Anson is going through. This book reminded me a ton of The Mentalist in how it deals with true crime, obsession, and the way the professional becomes personal. I really enjoyed it. Please check CWs before reading. 📸: I’m holding up a kindle displaying the ebook cover of Fragile Sanctuary. via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/C92LmmQgUtI/
