The Rakehell of Roth by Amalie Howard is the marriage of convenience turned marriage in crisis plot I didn’t know I needed? There’s angst! There’s disguises! There’s revenge! There’s spice! 1000% give me a story that starts with a fed up woman deciding to ruin her husband’s entire day. It reminded me so much of Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley or The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean, two historical romance marriage in crisis/second chance romances I loved! Isobel and Winter’s story begins with their wedding but then fast forwards three years to their estrangement and goes from there. I loved the relationship between Isobel and her father in law, as well as the way she goes about asserting her independence and interests separate of her relationship. Winter is an absolute dummy who definitely needed to grovel more than he did for making dummy (but relatable) choices, which basically are rooted in him being like: “FEELINGS? SHAN’T.” Ultimately, it felt a little drawn out and there was probably too much going on plot wise but it was also a good time (which is kind of a running theme of these books, tbh) and this one has remained my favorite of the series! TW: mentions of drug abuse, overdose, death ID1: I’m holding up a mass market paperback copy of The Rakehell of Roth in one hand. There’s a painting in coordinating colors in the background. ID2: A caption reads Winter Vance, Marquess of Roth, on Having Feelings ™ on a gifset of Michael from The Office saying “Wish I could, but I can’t. Well, can, but won’t. Should, maybe. But shorn’t.” via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CuHcNzbgRol/
