It's #ThrowbookThursday, and I'm talking about Kindred by Octavia Butler, a book I can't believe I haven't mentioned until now. This book, set in the 70s, is about a woman who finds herself inexplicably pulled back into the past. The book doesn't focus on the how (the time travel-y bit) but rather on the why, as well as the consequences for Dana to be brought back in time and experience events first hand. I first read this book in my book club and have since worked it into my curriculum! My students love to talk about the themes of the power of history, the ties of family, colorism, and biracial relationships. The action packed plot doesn't hurt either! Butler is hailed as the queen of Black SFF and it's clear why. I can't wait to read Parable of the Sower with my book club next month! via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CCtDzosg5Y-/
