@thereadingchemist and @allegedlymari challenged us to #NormalizeBlackHistory, so I had to jump in with one of my favorite figures from The Roaring Twenties: Josephine Baker! 🍌💃 Most well known for her scandalous banana dance, Baker was more than just a sex symbol: she was a lifelong performer and activist. She lived in France for a time, working as a spy for the Allies during WWII! She was appalled by the racism she experienced upon her return to the US and began working as a civil rights activist. She also adopted twelve children, whom she referred to as her rainbow tribe. Did I mention she had a pet cheetah? Baker's life is absolutely fascinating, and I love learning more about her. There are a ton of podcast episodes about Josephine Baker, from Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls to @missedinhistory to @oralhistorypod that I can't wait to listen to! 🍌💃 This image is from Bad Girls Throughout History by Ann Shen, which I also highly recommend! via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/CCMXvcfAwdB/
